The role of the school library is to support the teaching and learning programs in the school and to develop life long learning skills and a love of reading in the whole school community. It is used for educational and recreational purposes.
The collection housed in the library includes books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, computer programs, games, maps and pictures, robotic kits and 3D printers. The library has a bank of computers for the use of the school community. Resources are purchased from money received from families via the library fund.
Each class has a weekly library lesson during which students may change their books. All Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 students require a library bag for borrowing purposes. Students in Stages 2 and 3 may borrow up to three books at a time, students in Stage 1, two books and students in Early Stage 1, one book.
Classes are involved in co-operative planned library lessons involving their classroom teacher and the teacher librarian, which involve literature appreciation, borrowing of books, research and the development of information skills and Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) activities including robotics, coding and 3D printing design.
Regular borrowing is encouraged and if a student's book becomes long overdue a note may be sent home to his/her parents. No fine is imposed.
Parents are requested to contribute towards the cost of repairs or replacement of resources, which their child has lost or damaged. The Teacher Librarian will issue notes when necessary.
From Term 1 Week 9 until normal school operation resumes, the Library will be closed for before school and lunchtime activities.
Normal Operating Hours
The library is open before school and during lunchtime for all students indicated below:
Some of the activities we are participating in this year are the Premier's Reading Challenge, and Book Week Activities. We are embedding Robotics, Coding and 3D Printing into our curriculum for all students. Enrichment groups will be extending their skills further investigating and creating solutions for real world problems. Stage 2 and 3 will be busy using guided inquiry skills to research HSIE topics and presenting using a variety of digital and STEM tools.
We are excited this year to again be involved in the FLL (First Lego League) competition. This challenge involves identifying an issue around space, researching the issue and presenting a solution, programming robots (EV3) to complete missions then compete in November in the regional competition.
We are really proud of the KPS library and look forward to growing student interest in it's resources, with many new books, ebooks, computers, ipads, Dash and Dot, WeDO2.0 kits, EV2 Mindstorm Kits, and 3D Printers.
